A Passion for Rugby: The Story of a Felixstowe Rugby Volunteer Gareth

A Passion for Rugby: The Story of a Felixstowe Rugby Volunteer Gareth.
In this edition of our “Volunteer Spotlight,” we introduce one of Felixstowe Rugby Club’s most dedicated and long-standing members. Meet a man who has spent over two decades
shaping the club’s future both on and off the pitch; an inspiring player, coach, and leader
whose love for the game has never wavered.

A Journey That Began with a Chance Encounter
It all started 25 years ago with a simple conversation. At 18, while on a night out, he met two Felixstowe players, Darren and Trevor, who convinced him to turn up for a selection game the very next day. At the time, he had played rugby from the age of seven to fifteen at
Woodbridge and Ipswich but had stopped due to injury. Little did he know that stepping onto the field that day would set him on a path that would define much of his life.

Since that moment, he has played for Felixstowe Rugby Club every season, building lifelong friendships, collecting unforgettable memories, and growing from a young player into a leader at the heart of the club.

From Player to Leader: A Role for Every Hat
His volunteering journey began at just 20 years old when he took on the role of Fixture
Secretary. By 21, he had become Club Captain, a position he proudly held for three years,
earning his name on the club’s wall of honour. From there, his involvement only deepened,
taking on roles such as Club Secretary, Membership Secretary, Press Officer, Webmaster,
Mini and Youth Coach, Safeguarding Officer, and for the last seven years, Head Coach. And
he is still playing to this day!

With a career background in logistics and a talent for organisation, Gareth saw an
opportunity to support the club behind the scenes, particularly at a time when only a handful of people were managing all the various responsibilities. His dedication and enthusiasm has helped the club grow and flourish, ensuring a strong future for the next generation of players.

Building the Future of Felixstowe Rugby
One of his proudest achievements has been starting the Minis section alongside Rob
Brewster, Mark Pattinson, and Ben Stack. What began with just eight young boys, including
their own sons, has grown into a thriving youth setup. Today, he has the immense privilege
of not only coaching but also playing alongside those very same young men in the
Felixstowe Men’s team.

His journey with Felixstowe Rugby has also been one of personal growth. The club has
helped him develop leadership and interpersonal skills, which he further honed in 2016 by
completing a Leadership and Management Award with Rob Brewster. The skills gained have been invaluable, both in business and in rugby.

Memorable Moments and Incredible Honours
Through his years of service, Gareth has been fortunate to experience some incredible
moments. Recognised by the President of the RFU, he was treated to a VIP hospitality
weekend by England Rugby at the Six Nations. In 2019, he was awarded Coach of the Year
by Eastern Counties and was invited to a behind-the-scenes training camp at Penny Hill
Lane with Eddie Jones and the England squad - an unforgettable opportunity to meet the
players and watch them train up close.

Despite all these accolades, his greatest reward remains the friendships, the shared
experiences, and the family-like atmosphere that Felixstowe Rugby Club provides.

The Power of Volunteering: “You Can Give More Than You Think”
Reflecting on his years of service, he firmly believes that anyone can make a difference.
“You can start with a small role before realising where your skills can truly have an impact.”
Felixstowe Rugby Club, like all grassroots clubs, relies on committed individuals (volunteers
throughout) to keep things running smoothly. More volunteers mean a stronger, more diverse club that continues to support and nurture players for generations to come.

Gareth’s story is one of dedication, growth, and passion; a testament to what rugby and
community spirit can achieve. And as his playing days wind down, one thing is certain: his
love for Felixstowe Rugby Club will never fade. With 25 years behind him, he looks forward
to another 25 years of supporting, mentoring, and giving back to the club that has given him so much.

community. Whether you have experience in coaching, organising events, or just want to
