Volunteers are the backbone of Felixstowe Rugby Club, and in this instalment of Volunteer Spotlight, we’re featuring a key figure who helps keep the club running smoothly behind the scenes. Meet Dan Barnes, our dedicated Treasurer, who has been volunteering at the club for an incredible nine years. From balancing the books to pulling pints, Dan plays a crucial role in ensuring the club thrives both on and off the pitch.
From Player to Treasurer: A Different Way to Give Back
Dan’s journey with Felixstowe Rugby Club began like many others - on the pitch. After graduating from university, he attempted to return to playing but soon realised his body wasn’t quite up to the challenge. However, his love for the club and the warm welcome he received made him want to contribute in another way.
“When the treasurer's role became available, I stupidly stuck my head above the parapet!” Dan jokes. But in doing so, he found a role that not only benefited the club but also helped him develop his own professional skills.
The Many Hats of a Volunteer
While his main role is Treasurer, Dan has taken on much more over the years. “I handle the annual accounts, bar work, cooking, and I’m a club director as well,” he explains. Whether he’s crunching numbers or flipping burgers on match day, Dan’s contributions help keep Felixstowe Rugby Club running smoothly.
Why Volunteering Matters
Despite his busy schedule, Dan says the best part of volunteering is the club’s atmosphere. “The family feel of Felixstowe Rugby Club is something special. Even though I don’t get up to the club as much as I’d like for social events, I always leave feeling a sense of pride in what we have.”
On a personal level, the role has been a valuable learning experience. “When I first took on the treasurer role, I was fairly wet behind the ears with bookkeeping, despite my accountancy background. It’s helped me complement my studies and develop my career.”
Thinking About Volunteering? Dan Has Some Advice!
If you’re on the fence about getting involved, Dan has four simple letters for you: JFDI! (Just Flippin’ Do It!) “There are always reservations, whether it’s about the type of job, the time commitment, or whether you’ll be able to step away when needed. None of these things matter. We are genuinely grateful for any support, even if it’s just serving cups of tea in the kitchen for an hour on a Sunday.”
The Impact of Volunteers Like Dan
Volunteers don’t just help with the day-to-day running of the club, they save it thousands of pounds each year. “Accountancy fees for a simple set of accounts can be around £2,000 these days,” Dan explains. “By handling this myself, we can use those funds for other areas that benefit players and members directly.”
But beyond finances, Dan believes the true strength of Felixstowe Rugby Club lies in its people. “The club wouldn’t exist without our volunteers, members, and sponsors. Everyone works together to promote rugby in the town and beyond. When we all pull in the same direction, it makes being part of the committee a rewarding and enjoyable experience - except maybe when we’re freezing on a Monday night!”
